A History of Rare Storage Discoveries

March 10, 2019     News

The mystery of what lurks behind the shutters of a personal storage unit can provide a thrilling yet dubious moment for the anticipator awaiting to discover the contents. Having said that, the euphoria experienced by those who fortuitously stumbled across these rarest of items would have undoubtedly superseded that initial feeling.

Who knows! One of our storage units in Somerset could be secreting something just as rare as the unearthing below.

Amelia Earhart Photos

A californian woman was cleaning out a personal storage unit when she came across a collection of pictures of the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean, Amelia Earhart. The aviation pioneer died in 1937 while attempting to fly around the globe.

A 1937 Bugatti 57S

Vintage Bugatti

Today known as the makers of one of the fastest and most expensive production cars around, Bugatti produced a limited number of these elegant machines. It spent over 50 years in storage before a young Englishman, whose father had placed it in storage, discovered the 57S in 2009.

A 1977 Snowboard

At the beginning of 2015 a woman came across two snowboards having acquired a unit in an auction. The conditioning and antiquity of one in particular lead her to post it on eBay before a spate of early bids signified that she’d discovered something super rare.

There was only 100 of the vintage 1977 snowboards made and it was released by the co-creator of the modern day snowboard, Jake Burton. This item is potentially the most expensive snowboard ever, having landed the women just under £25,000.

James Bond’s Car

Going back to 1989 and to a moment when someone discovered James Bond’s car from the 1977 film ‘The Spy Who Loved Me’. The ‘Wet Nellie’ Lotus Esprit submarine has some remarkable features, retractable wheels and fins attached to the sides for example, and was used during the underwater scene.

Disney Memorabilia

40,000 pieces of Hollywood memorabilia were found back in 2011, in an abandoned storage unit. Included in the collection were Disney film cells, publicity photographs and autographed work. Also among the findings were costumes, posters, scripts and art from the director of outlandish films ‘Beetlejuice’ and ‘Edward Scissorhands’, Tim Burton.

A Pirate’s Chest

Treasure Chest

A man in San Jose, California, walked the plank on an abandoned storage unit and did not see a vast blue ocean before his eyes, instead he was greeted with the marvellous site of a pirate’s chest. The unnamed man discovered over $500,000 worth of gold and silver while the weight of the haul meant it required three men to shift it.
